TRY COMPOSTING INSTEAD!
Home compost bins reduce the need for yard waste disposal programs and save community resources. Home composting is simple and requires little upkeep. For information on home composting, click here. |
The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that leaves, grass clippings and other yard waste makes up an astonishing 14.3% of material disposed of nationally before recycling. Fortunately, organic material can be recycled into a valuable soil amendment. A variety of CVWMA programs address the disposal of this plentiful waste material.
Participating local jurisdictions have the ability to divert a substantial amount of organic waste from landfills through collection of leaves, wood, and other yard waste. These materials may be collected at the homes of citizens or dropped off at local transfer and solid waste convenience centers.
Some of the material is ground into mulch. Localities may provide the finished mulch product to residents free of charge or for a small fee or use the material for civic landscaping projects.
Some participating localities collect leaves in neighborhoods and deliver the material to the CVWMA's contracted farms where the leaves are composted and tilled into the soil as a valuable soil amendment. The program benefits both local farmers and participating jurisdictions. Farmers receive the material needed to produce a rich soil amendment, and the localities save on landfill disposal costs and conserve local landfill space for items that are not recyclable.
